He was omitted from Ireland squads towards the end of last year as he considered his international future, and last month it was confirmed that Rice had chosen to play for England moving forward.Gareth Southgate has wasted no time in calling up the midfielder for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.Southgate said of Rice’s inclusion: “His form warrants it. We like what we’ve seen in terms of his personality, his character and his leadership qualities. He’ll fit very well into how we work.” Rice was the only uncapped player in the squad as Southgate favoured the tried and tested on the whole. There was a recall for Tom Heaton, whose impressive form for Burnley has seen him selected alongside fellow goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland.Southgate has kept faith with Kieran Trippier, despite questions over fitness and form, while James Tarkowski and Harry Maguire returned to the squad as Lewis Dunk and the injured Joe Gomez dropped out.

Harry Winks and Jesse Lingard were not risked due to groin and hamstring issues respectively, but Callum Wilson did enough on his return from a seven-week lay-off to be included again. There is surprisingly no place in the 25-man selection for Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Crystal Palace. The young right-back has been tipped for international recognition having starred for the Eagles this season.England take on the Czech Republic and Montenegro this month as they begin the qualification campaign for Euro 2020, a tournament which will be partly held in London.
